Canada-Africa Prevention Trials Network

The Canada-Africa Prevention Trials (CAPT) Network began in March 2007 as a partnership of leading HIV researchers, clinicians and NGOs in Canada and Africa who were interested in a new model of international HIV prevention research. With funding from the Government of Canada, CAPT Network is engaging South-South and South-North relationships to empower African leaders in developing and executing studies that respond to local needs.

The Network provides a comprehensive and sustainable research infrastructure for the purpose of improving the health of people in Eastern and Southern Africa. Over the coming years, the Network will develop necessary resources to mount appropriate prevention and treatment studies in sub-Saharan Africa.

Currently, CAPT Network has eight participating centres in Africa, five collaborating institutions in Canada, three committees and three research teams.

• Grand Challenges Canada
  On May 3, 2010, Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty announced the launch of Grand Challenges Canada, an innovative initiative that will identify global health challenges, fund researchers and support the implementation and commercialization of the solutions that emerge.

• An expanded CAPT Network is hopeful of receiving a four-year infrastructure grant
  An ambitious CAPT Network plan to enhance its prevention research activities at its eight African sites has been submitted for funding to the Canadian government’s Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI).

• Allan Ronald to address Canadian researchers on Canada’s role in global HIV prevention
  A keynote presentation at the upcoming Conference of the Canadian Association for HIV Research (May 13 to 16, in Saskatoon, Canada) will be given by well-known researcher, Allan Ronald. It is entitled: "Reducing HIV Incidence in Resource Limited Societies - Partnership Roles for Canada and Canadians".

• Quarter of Deaths in People with HIV Caused by TB, WHO Reports
  24 March 2009 (Aidsmap) - Around one-quarter of deaths in people with HIV worldwide were caused by TB in 2007, the World Health Organization said today. [full story here]
