CAPT Network Fellowships & Mentorships

Fellowships

The purpose of the CAPT Network postdoctoral fellowship programme is to increase the number of trained scientists who are committed to developing and conducting HIV prevention studies in Africa in conjunction with the CAPT Network. The supervisor must be an experienced scientist with an appointment at an affi liated CAPT Network institution. The supervisor must be willing to provide the applicant with a formal experiential learning program, including involvement in the development and management of at least one HIV prevention study. Applicants must have completed a medical degree or PhD. Medical applicants must have either completed or becurrently enrolled in an accredited medical residency programme. Non-medical applicants must have completed their PhD. The value of this award will be $30,000 (USD). During the tenure of award the fellow must devote at least 75 percent of her/his time to the fellowship. She/he is not permitted to simultaneously hold a second major scholarship. The adjudication will favour applicants with high potential for developing into future principal investigators of HIV prevention studies. Priority areas for adjudication are: (i) strength of the applicant; (ii) strength of the proposed training and supervision, and (iii) strength of the proposed research to be developed or undertaken. Women are highly encouraged to apply.

Mentorships

The purpose of CAPT Network mentorship awards is to provide new Master’s or PhD level academics with ‘hands on’ work-learning experience in HIV research, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor. Candidates may ask for two to six months of support. The amount awarded will range from $2,500 to $7,000 (USD), based on the time needed to complete the project. Two to four mentorships will be awarded during 2008, depending on the number of qualified applicants. Applicants must partner with an experienced HIV clinical investigator or other professional working at a CAPT Network site. Mentors do not need to have an appointment within the Network. However, the proposed programme of work must be relevant to CAPT Network’s research objectives. Applicants may submit to this programme if they intend to do work or build skills in any area of HIV research (clinical, basic or behavioural sciences). Priority areas for adjudication are: (i) strength of the applicant; (ii) strength of the proposed supervision, and (iii) strength of the proposed training or research to be undertaken. Women are highly encouraged to apply.
